An Overview of Senior Living Options
Quick Links
Whether you’re looking for yourself or someone else, when it comes to senior living, there are a lot of options that are available. We know how confusing it is to be bombarded with a lot of terms and discussions of options, so we want to help you understand.
There are four basic types of options for senior living, depending on what you’re looking for, your needs and your budget.
-
Continuing Care Retirement Communities Continuing Care Retirement Communities, also known as Life Plan Communities, like Westminster Communities of Florida’s active living communities. These communities offer an exciting and active lifestyle and maintenance-free living, with residents who enjoy three residential options: independent living, assisted living, memory care and nursing care. These communities generally also offer therapy and rehabilitation services on site, and may offer pharmacy and home care services. Residents generally pay an Entrance Fee to enter, which guarantees them access to future care at a reduced cost, as well as the assurance of knowing that they can remain in the community for life, although a rental contract option may be available to you in certain circumstances.
At many Continuing Care Retirement Communities, residents may move in first as independent living residents, or may move directly into assisted living or nursing care.

Active adult or 55+ communities An active adult community can be either a rental community or a community of homeowners. In these communities, a variety of lifestyle options may be available – wellness and lifelong learning classes, for example. In a homeowner community, the homeowner is responsible for all maintenance; in a rental community, the landlord is responsible. No care or assurance of future care is provided.

Assisted living, memory care and nursing care communities These types of communities are either free-standing residential communities or part of a Continuing Care Retirement Community, and offer specialized services to support residents’ needs when they have difficulty with ordinary daily living activities or need extra care 24/7. Free-standing communities generally only offer rental contract options.

Affordable housing communities for older adults Affordable housing communities for older adults, which are apartment home communities restricted to residents over a certain age. At a Westminster Communities of Florida affordable housing community, residents must be at least 62. Our communities offer both affordable market rate rental apartments, and subsidized units for residents meeting certain income criteria.
